Things on my mind

December 6, 2005 - 8:25pm

Peppers - I'm obsessing about peppers right now. I simply can't eat enough. I'm planning whole meals around peppers, specifically jalapenos (out of a jar) and pepperoncinis. Yesterday at lunch I ate Subway so I could get jalapenos on my sandwich. Last night I made scrambled eggs so I could put jalapenos in them. I'm still not satisfied. Anyone have any suggestions?

Girls Club - I've never really been part of a girls club. I think I'm more of a one-one-one type person and fit pretty well in the boys club. (Or I used to.) In elementary school I was friends with two girls, Melody and Melanie. Three makes a club, right? So I guess I was part of one once. In junior high, I don't remember, because I'm trying to block the whole experience out. (Except for the part where Tim and I held hands for the first time in the back of the school van.) In high school, I hung out with mostly guys. My "club" was with guys. One of my friends' mom's used to joke that I was the leader of an all boys gang. HA! In college, things became very one-on-one for me. I forged friendships with individuals rather than a group. In the past few years I'd say the same is true. I had girlfriends in Dallas, but I was never really apart of the "girls club." So I guess I've never really bee in the girls club. I wonder what this says about my ability to socialize in groups.

Visiting Dallas - I'm going to Dallas on Thursday. I've got some business in the office to do then I'll be attending the office's holiday party Friday night. Naturally I'll be staying for the weekend so I can see family and friends. Oh, and get a haircut. I can't seem to give up my hairdresser in Arlington so I keep going. I just don't want to find a new one after all these years (almost 5)!

I disagree! A) I don't get along better with guys, and B) I am totally a member of a girls club (though we call it the "girls potluck") and it's not the first such group I've been a member of. Girls nights are definitely a norm around here (Boston, grad school)-- the women tend to get together by themselves for a pre-party before going to the "everyone party"... and when I lived in Dallas, we had an all-woman book club. I have a theory on this, actually (what's your theory, Abby? Please please tell us!): I think that the 'ol boys club is passe. It's politically unpopular. But the 'ol girls club is on the rise. It's not politically uncool for women to get together and exclude the men (we're still not taken seriously, so it's 'girls night' and how could that be threatening?), but if you reverse that, everyone thinks the guys are a bunch of chauvenistic jerks for not inviting the women along... therefore (and here's my theory), in our generation, the women's networks will prove stronger than the men's. All because of girls clubs. You saw it here first, folks. And if I'm wrong, I'll meet you gals at the glass ceiling...

Seriously, I'm calling Ana and telling her to cut you off. It is time to find a hairdresser in Phoenix!

You could always join the Red Hat Club...

You know, almost every girl I have ever talked to says the same thing, that they got along better with guys. My theory is that there are no true girls clubs, except fake-oh sororities and crap. Girls clubs are like unicorns. Everyone wants one, but they do not exist.
