Talking in the Elevator

May 2, 2008 - 8:49pm

The new job is going well. I really like the clients and the work I get to do with them. I enjoy working in downtown and riding the bus to work a couple days a week. However, this is something I'm unsure of.

It's the elevator. My office in on the 10th floor of the building so I ride the elevator. It's not a big deal except that sometimes people in the elevator want to talk. I am NOT one of these people. I'm uncomfortable sharing such a small space with total strangers. Plus, I'm bad at small talk and it's always small talk.

I wish I could take the stairs just to avoid these awkward conversations, but the stairs are for emergencies only and are locked. I guess I'd better find the elevator-talking mindset so I can come up with appropriate responses. I think elevator meditation is in my future.

You could always wear a pair of iPod headphones and pretend to not hear anyone who tries to talk to you ;)

I was going to suggest the exact same thing as Ben. Even if it's just your iPhone headset, they look the same :)

iPod & sunglasses. or just hug yourself all the way up and make cooing noises.

I like when I get on a full elevator and instead of turning around to face the door I just keep facing the back wall (and therefore facing everyone in the elevator). It is such a breach of decorum that it takes everyone by surprise and sometimes spontaneous laugher erupts.

But then, I'm weird.

How can the stairs be for emergency only?! I'd contact the building owner and ask for that to be changed...they should be encouraging people to take the stairs!

Exactly what I was going to say! They're a deterrent-- people won't try to talk to you if you're wearing them.

Ok, so I'm the only one that thinks it is kinda nice that people are actually willing to chat to strangers? I mean we live in a world where, more often than not, people are so self absorbed, apathetic, and unaware. I would think that seeing the same people in the elevator on occassion would be a nice way to meet new people. Why not just try and be friendly?

You, bad a small talk? Your blog is a kind of blogging small talk: polite, SFW, etc. You can do this, Erica!

Darn. I agree with Autumn too. Unless it's a creepy man. Then I'm all about the ipod.
