Today I sent email to the phone book company asking them to stop sending me phone books. I don't use the phone book any more and don't want the paper to go straight into the recycle bin. I was inspired by the site, 50 Ways to Help (link via Gist).
I was surprised to get this response:
"Our records have been updated. Thank you for using [name of phone book company here]."
Do you think they're serious? Or is this just the email they send when there's no procedure in place to deal with such a request? I guess I'll know in a year or so when I do or don't get any more phone books.
Erica, I am sure they are serious, I have a membership with MyJunkTree and I stopped the phone books with a click of a button. I received an email confirming I was off of the list in a few days. It was quick and easy, However in the FAQ section of MyJunkTree website they let me know up front that the delivery side of the process is very weak. They are pretty low wage earners and they get paid to drop off a book, they don't really seem to follow a list. so you are probably about 50-50 on this one. I signed up to Remove Junk Mail so the phone books was just an added bonus, I was really tired of all the credit card offers and catalogs. Those have been almost virtually eliminated so I am pretty happy even If I get a phone book, at least I tried.
Thanks, Kelset! It's nice to have someone else's thoughts on this. And I should check out MyJunkTree since I could use to get off some junk mailing lists too.
