Sniper Shootings I heard on

Sniper Shootings
I heard on the radio this morning that they arrested two men in conjunction with the Washington area sniper shootings. It didn't sound like it was the actual shooter but hopefully they're getting closer to him. It's mind boggling how someone can just go out and shoot random people. Not for any other reason than for death. I got a call the other day at work from a woman in Canada. She was asking about Americans' reactions to these horrible circumstances. All I could say is how bad I feel; I can't even begin to imagine the fear people in that area must be experiencing.

Thirteen people (who were doing normal, daily things in a public place) were randomly chosen and shot. The shooter is using a high powered rifle and is apparently a good marksman. The newspapers have reported finding a tarot card and later, at another location, a letter. Authorities announced today that they were preparing a response. Knowing the whole story someday will be extremely interesting. In the meantime, I just hope he will be caught.

And just as disturbing in the news...what is Saddam doing in Iraq releasing all the prisoners? Weird, weird.

*Update* - ends up the men arrested this morning had absolutely nothing to do with shootings at all. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Last month, thirty "people (who were doing normal, daily things in a public place) were randomly chosen and" killed by fatal traffic accidents. I can't even begin to imagine the fear people driving a car in Dallas must be experiencing. Texas has about 3800 fatal auto accidents each year, which is about 300 each month Dallas is rated very poorly, with 16.23 deaths annually per 100,000 population The population of Dallas is around 2.2 million Math tells us ~360 people/year or 30/month die in Dallas cars. This is 1/10 of the total for the state, so it's a valid/reasonable number.

Hmm, I live in the Dallas area but don't live in constant fear of dying in a car accident. I suppose this is because 1. I am aware that when I get in a car that I am putting myself at risk. (Unlike the woman who was shot while sitting on a park bench.) AND 2. I feel like I have some control of my situation by driving defensively and avoiding accidents. (Unlike the people who was simply walking through a parking lot or filling their cars with gas.) So I feel that it's a totally different situation as I would assume most people in the country would agree. But thank you for educating us on how dangerous it is to drive a car. Luckily that is a choice we can make. Unfortunately for the Virginia residents, their choice is to stay inside. Not much of a choice if you ask me.
