I'm getting a new car! I'm getting a new car! Can you tell I'm excited?
After driving the Honda Civic for 11 years and over 220,000 miles, I am getting a new car. Yesterday Chris reserved us a Nissan LEAF. The special thing about the LEAF is that it is an all-electric car. We have to wait until the end of 2010 or possibly later to get a LEAF, but I can wait because it is such a special car. It's awesome that Nissan is listening to what customers want and moving forward with all-electric technology.
I am jealous :( I wish we could buy them in Canada! :'(
Nice! I wish I could get one but I have no outdoor outlet with which to charge it.
how exciting!
Rad! I hadn't heard of the Leaf, but it sounds pretty awesome. Looking forward to seeing a post about it when you get it!
Awesome!
Arizona is a coal state. The Leaf is dirtier than a new gasoline car.
Anonymous: You should really do your research before ranting off completely false information. You should also man up and state your name if you're going to make claims that are arguable.
Stats from the government:
coal: 2.117 lbs of CO2 per killowatt hour (http://www.eia.doe.gov/electricity/page/co2_report/co2report.html#electric)
Gas: 19.4 lbs of CO2 per gallon (http://www.epa.gov/oms/climate/420f05004.htm)
Using these numbers I get the following calculations:
Avg gas car: 23.39 mpg (nat'l avg for cars - 17-ish for trucks), so 19.4 lbs CO2/23.39 mpg = .829 lb CO2/mile
Electric car: 120 volt, 15 amps, 8 hrs = 14.4 KW Hrs
2.117 lbs CO2/kwh * 14.4 KWh = 30.485 lbs CO2/charge
30.485 Lbs/Charge / 100 miles/Charge = .30485 lbs CO2/mile
As you see, .829 > .30485, so you are wrong.
Learn to investigate rumors that you want to spread. You'd think the internet had taught you that by now.
CO2 is not yet an official pollutant. NOx, SOx and mercury are official pollutants. LEAF creates more pollution than a new gasoline car.
