The Truth (According to Andy)
After food, clothing, and shelter are taken care of, what humans crave is recognition.
"I am good at this thing I do. This thing I do is important to my society."
Money is, alas, the prevalent symbol that our society uses to measure these social intangibles.
There are other forms of recognition, such as diplomas, trophies, and even little brass nameplates. None of which we would ever exchange for money. These things are indelible, *specific* proof of our successes.
Within the realm of the money symbol, it is a little more hazy and indefinite:
"I am smart and skilled enough to do what must be done in order to have these things."
These are the words written on the invisible placard worn by people who drive $60,000 cars.
After we have food, clothing, and a place to live,
what we *really* want is someone to tell us
that we're doing all right with our lives.
