Driving

May 20, 2004 - 4:36pm

I drive a lot. I live in Dallas/Fort Worth which is a huge metropolitan area. I seldom go anywhere in DFW that doesn't require a trip on the expressway. On a typical day I spend about an hour (give or take 20 minutes) in my car just going to and from work. On school days, I spend 1 and a half to two hours in my car. I've been wondering how many miles I actually drive every day so yesterday I paid particular attention.

Home to work - 24 miles / 39 km
Work to school - 22 miles / 35 km
School to home - 31 miles / 50 km
Total roundtrip - 77 miles / 124 km

Based on yesterday's calculations which are totally typical of a school day, I've figured out what a typical week looks like. Note that this is a minimum because there's a good chance I go to school on more days than just when I have class. Then there's Saturday and Sunday. Most of my friends live in Dallas (about 30 miles away) so I typically drive that roundtrip at least once in a weekend.

Monday (work only) - 48 miles
Tuesday (school and work) - 77 miles
Wednesday (school and work) - 77 miles
Thursday (work only) - 48 miles
Friday (work only) - 48 miles
Saturday & Sunday - ???
Minimum total for the week - 298 miles / 480 km

That's just crazy. Someday I want to live in a smaller city.

I did about 230 miles this weekend alone driving to see friends and taking care of business, and even then, it was almost completely within Tarrant and Denton County. Back when I was commuting to Denton on a regular basis, I'd do around 450 miles a week. This place is VERY spread-out.

I hear ya... Dallas and Houston need to completely rethink their public transportation systems and get something in place that works and works well. At least here in Lubbock you can grab a bus to just about anywhere (even though it takes a while).

geez...that's why i love living in dallas. if i drive a lot, i put about 20 miles a day on my car. (today will probably do that. from thomas's my my house, to target and to the video store.) on a normal day, (work, home and t's) i drive less than ten miles. love it.

Yeah... 450 miles a week minimum, not including weekends. As I started writing this, I felt boastful, like I WIN or something, but, now I just feel sad. My new job should quarter that, at least!

I live in Dallas, but don't put very many miles on the car. 26 miles roundtrip to work. Only go out on greenville and Ellum (pretty close) and never EVER pass 635. Well, I do go NOrth of 635, but I hate it... LIke a different country up there.

we intentionally bought "less house" so we could live closer to our workplaces, as Michael and I both hate to commute. We are big, whiny babies about it, actually. It's pathetic.

^^^ Grrrr... Makes me mad, I have some friends that live up around 75 and Campbell... Paid same for their house as I did, but it is HUGE, has a pool, blah... screw it, they just sit in it and stare at each other because it's such a long drive to come meet people out in the "city".

Shaun, Dude - 75 and Campbell is still practically downtown. If that's "way out" in you're book, I wonder what you think about people in Plano or McKinney.

Right. There are people living in mansions in Texas for what I pay for my 1200 square foot apartment in New Jersey. And to get to New York or Philly, I STILL have to drive 50-60 miles in one direction or another.

Well at least I know it is not jsut me. I have a feeling I will not be doing much of going places. Not alone at least. i am sure in time I will get used to it though.
