Coworker Frustration

I work with one of the most unhelpful people I have ever come across in my life. It's so amazing to me that he's unhelpful because we're in the department that gives customers help. This person is so unhelpful I'm trying to find ways not to work with them. I just want to avoid them. I've never had this problem before. I've never had such difficulty with a coworker. It's weird because it's work. It shouldn't be like this.
Any suggestions for how I should work through this? I know that this person is not going to change so if things are going to get better, I have to change. Advice would be appreciated.
