Bike to Work Day

April 28, 2009 - 3:22am

Wednesday, April 22nd was Bike to Work Day. The event is designed to get people to try riding their bikes to work and get them to consider it as an option for commuting. As I've gotten to ride more, I commute to work on a bike a couple times a week. It's been a great change for me as I'm SO much more relaxed when I get to work.

For Bike to Work Day, Phoenix had a small (escorted!) bike ride through downtown and free breakfast. It started earlier than I normally ride, but I decided it was important to show my support for this event.

I was really pleased when I met Joseph at the ride. He's a city employee who is a big supporter of bicycle infrastructure. I heard him speak a couple months ago at a bike event. He educated us on lanes around the new light rails lines and passed out new bike maps. I really enjoyed talking with Joseph during the ride & met a few other really neat people too. It was a great morning & a fun event!

A Dog's Life

April 26, 2009 - 11:52pm

Dogs life

Sometimes the dogs are a good reminder that it's time to slow down. Chris and I had a very busy weekend and this morning, I took the time to just lay around with the dogs. It was the relaxing that I needed. The dogs make excellent napping companions.

Spring

April 16, 2009 - 12:26am

In the backyard

Spring has sprung here in the desert and it's beautiful! This is the prickly pear cactus in our backyard.

Life is good and spring is making me feel very alive. Our social calendar is very full which makes me feel good too. I'm lucky to have so many good people in my life.

Friday night Chris and I stayed home and watched season 3 of Weeds. I've really, really been enjoying that show. Saturday night we celebrated Kara's birthday at Tuck Shop. The food and atmosphere was fabulous! We moved on to Lost Leaf for a beer, which was surprisingly busy. Just shows that more and more people are spending nights in downtown Phoenix. (If I were younger, I'd totally start a bar in downtown right now.)

Sunday Chris and I worked around the house...practically to the point of exhaustion. We're about to start a new project so we cleaned out a closet. That in itself was a ton of work! It's scary to think of the stuff that gets put into a closet and isn't touched again for years.

After a hard day of housework, we kicked back with Mike & celebrated his birthday. It was a really good night!

Bentley's Dislocated Hip

April 9, 2009 - 2:58pm

When Chris and I came back from our big weekend riding bikes, we noticed immediately that Bentley was limping. He wasn't putting any weight on his back left leg. At first, I figured he just was stiff (he is getting old...11 years is our estimate). After a little while, I realized that this was in fact a serious injury and not just stiffness.

Chris took Bentley to the vet as soon as possible to get him looked at. The vet couldn't definitely say without x-rays so we did them. Turns out Bentley had dislocated his hip. Needless to say, this was horrible, horrible news. The vet's recommendation was surgery which was very expensive.

I was at work when Chris was telling me all this over the phone. I instantly fell apart, because I didn't think we could afford surgery for one of the dogs. Plus, Bentley isn't a young dog. I know my crying caused Chris a lot of worry so he instantly went into "fix it" mode.

Chris did tons of research and called a bunch of different vets. He eventually decided that we would opt for a less expensive treatment with a different vet. This treatment consisted of putting the dog to sleep, moving the hip back into place, and wrapping the leg so it won't move. By the time I got home from work, Bentley was all fixed up. I don't have any pictures of the sling he wore, but it was pretty impressive.

That first night was tough. Bentley was definitely in pain and cried a lot. (He's generally a fairly whiny dog anyway so it's just enhanced when he hurts. It's very sad.) We were up in the middle of the night to carry him downstairs so he could go to the bathroom. Bentley couldn't get comfortable. It was a really tough night for all of us.

Bentley got a haircut

In the morning, we were checking him out and saw that his toes were swollen. The vet warned us that if the sling moved, it might cut off circulation to the toes. So I called the vet who had me come in immediately. At the office, I learned that Bentley's hip had slipped out of socket again.

That was really tough and sad to hear. I knew that Bentley couldn't live with a dislocated hip, but I didn't know if we financially swing the surgery. Much to my surprise, the vet had sympathy on me. He wanted to work with us on the cost of the surgery and offered a greatly discounted price. He kept saying that he thought Bentley was such a sweet dog and that he was sure the surgery would be worth it. We would be giving Bentley a few more years of good living.

So last Tuesday, Bentley had hip surgery and an overnight stay at the vet. His recovery has been amazingly fast. The first couple days, he didn't walk much and I carried him everywhere. Naturally he slept a lot. But into day 3, he started putting some weight on his back leg. Before I knew it, Bentley was walking more and more on his own.

Now that it's been a week since the surgery, the vet looked him over and was pleased with the progress. Bentley is moving around quite well. The hip has good movement too. We're confident Bentley is going to heal up and be almost as good as before. He's just got to take it easy the next 3 weeks (which means I'll keep carrying him up and down the stairs).

I feel very lucky that the situation has turned out as wonderfully as it has. We are really glad Bentley is healing and will soon be getting back to his old self. I love this little guy a lot!

Calexico in Heritage Square

April 9, 2009 - 1:21am

Saturday night Chris and I went to the Calexico concert in Heritage Square. We haven't been to a live show in ages and this was the perfect one to attend. The weather was gorgeous, the venue perfect, a great audience, and lots of wonderful, wonderful musicians.

The MS150

April 7, 2009 - 2:01pm

Chris and I rode our bikes, his a fixed gear and mine a single speed, 125 miles in and around Florence, Arizona for the MS150. It was a great weekend where we had a lot of fun. Plus, Chris and I raised $1050 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Thanks to all of our sponsors!

Erica & Chris

This was our first big cycling event and it was a great, great experience. This event was extremely well planned and all the sponsors and volunteers were wonderful! I totally understand why we met so many people who had been participating in this event for 10 - 15 years.

Friday night we had a great spaghetti dinner with our friends Chad and David. Then we all drove down to Florence, which is only about an hour from Phoenix. It was dark by the time we arrived so finding the camping spot where our team was set up took some time. Everyone was camping in the main city park. It was a cold, cold night!

Jesse David

On Saturday morning the entire AZFixed team headed out for a big day of cycling.

morning prep

Everyone on the team is a much faster rider than I am, but I'm lucky that Chris chose to ride with me all day. We enjoyed all the time together. We started at 7:30am and finished around 3pm. There were rest stops every 10-12 miles where we could use the facilities as well as get water and snacks. It was very nice!

Erica's view most of Saturday

The route was mostly flat and through a lot of farm or ranch land. There was one mountain that required significant climbing, but I surprised myself with a strong performance. The rest stop on top was a welcome sight! The down hill was the fastest I've ever ridden; Chris said his computer showed over 30 miles per hour. However, that was simply gravity doing its work. During most of the day we rode 12-15 miles per hour. (Again, fairly slow but it's what I'm comfortable with.)

Erica & Chris

We ended up riding 75 miles on Saturday rather than the 100 we had planned for. We simply ran out of time. In order to complete 100 miles, we had to reach a rest stop by 1:30pm. Unfortunately, we reached the rest stop at 1:45pm just barely missing the cutoff. I was disappointed but totally understood. Volunteers couldn't be around all day and the route needed to be closed at some point.

Everything turned out for the best, as it always does. At this rest stop, we were cheered on by our friend Rebecca (aka Socks) who rode her bike all the way from Phoenix.

Socks, our cheerleader!

Then a few minutes later, the majority of our team showed up. We all rested together than rode back into town as a team. Getting to ride the last 12 miles with the team was a special experience for me.

AZFixed Team

Saturday afternoon and evening was all about relaxing and having fun. We enjoyed dinner, the beer garden, the band, and the awards ceremony. Much to our surprise, the AZFixed team won the Team Spirit award!

Everyone especially enjoyed playing with the four person bike brought by Trailhead Bike Cafe.

Two Wheels Off!

After a full night's rest, we were up and ready for more riding on Sunday. We were both definitely a bit sore from the day before, but not in pain.

Chris & Erica

On Sunday's route, we could choose from 50 or 75 miles. The time frame was shorter but I was confident we could finish all 75 miles. Then the wind started and didn't stop. It was extremely gusty and for me very discouraging. Rather than making myself miserable, I opted for the 50 mile route and finished with a smile on my face.

You can see all the MS150 pictures on Flickr.

Chris and I were definitely sore and tired by the end of the weekend. Monday morning my thighs were quite sore, but to my surprise I felt normal again by Tuesday. All in all, the MS150 was a great experience for me and I'll definitely be doing it again!
