On Thursday nights I've started getting together with some ladies to ride bikes. It's a good opportunity to be social and get some exercise at the same time. Plus, I'm making friends with some very cool women. Yesterday, we rode 14 miles and stopped to see Arizona Falls, which is a public art piece on the canal.
There's a dog park in Gilbert, Arizona with a pond for the dogs to swim in. It's called Cosmo Dog Park and it's the best. While Gilbert is technically considered part of the Phoenix area, this dog park is an hour away from our house. (What a sprawling city!) Despite the distance, we took the dogs to the park a couple weekends ago. We met up with Rachel, Jamie, and Tyson. Everyone, especially the furriest of us, had a great time.
Remember, they're asleep. It's dark in the room and you just lifted up the shade. They don't want all your light in the room. It's too bright and they're just now waking up.
You need to dim your light. Turn it down so only a little shows. Wake them up slowly. As they get used to the light, you can let more and more of it show. Eventually, they will be able to accept all your light.
On Tuesday night, Chris and I went to a free movie at the Phoenix art museum with a couple friends. I love, love, love the movies at the museum. It gives me a reason to wander around the museum a bit. I saw some new stuff as well as some of my favorite pieces.
Most importantly, we saw Bettina, a film by Sam Bassett. Sam lives on the roof of The Chelsea Hotel and Bettina lives on the 5th floor. They met in the hallway. He helped her clean up her apartment which was being investigated as a fire hazard since she had rooms full of stuff. It turns out all the stuff was Bettina's art. The film is both about her art & life, but it is also about Sam's friendship with Bettina.
It was quite good, even though it was difficult to watch at times. I really, really liked it. I also really liked the question and answer session with Sam Bassett, who was in Phoenix. I only wish that session could have gone on for another couple hours. (Or that Sam could have joined us for drinks afterwards.)
Take a look at Sam's work:

Karen and Jason's daughter, Madeline, was born at 7:49pm on Monday, September 15, 2008. She is 7 pounds 13 ounces. I'm SO thrilled!
I hear that everyone is healthy though I can't wait to see pictures and talk to Karen. I'm sure she's recovering from a very, very long and exhausting day yesterday.
Karen, my sister, is going to have a baby!! I'm going to be an aunt to a new little girl very, very soon!
On Saturday, I rode my bike for 36 miles. Yeah, I didn't know I had it in me either.
Chris and I rode to Matt's Big Breakfast where we met up with David. David rode in from Mesa, which we guess is about the same distance. After breakfast, Chris rode to work and I rode home. It took about 1.5 hours to get downtown. It took about 2.5 hours to get home. I was pretty beat so I stopped quite a bit on the way back. Now I'm a little sunburned but I'm proud of myself. This certainly puts my head in the right place when it comes to riding my bike long distances. (I can do it!)

Thanks to Gmap-Pedometer.com for the map making tools!
It was nice to have a long weekend with the Labor Day holiday. It was plenty social for us (as have many of the weekends lately). Friday night we met up with the usual group for Phoenix Friday Coffee. We started a Fair Trade Cafe which I liked a lot. Great little shop in a great location in downtown. Then we walked a few blocks to Lost Leaf to drink beer. I recognized the bar as soon as I walked in; having seen it in a magazine. Enjoyed the company, especially getting to catch up with Gist.
Saturday while Chris was at work, I met up with Kelly and the kids (3 adorable boys). We met at a coffee/ice cream shop and got to catch up while the kids played. Kelly is great so I really enjoyed it. But I also enjoyed being around the kids...I'm apparently not getting enough kid time. I miss my nephew!
After coffee, I spent the afternoon sewing. I finished up my first messenger bag. It's definitely a prototype, but I'm pretty happy with it. I need to call Cinnamon and ask a few questions. She's definitely the best bag-maker I know! Chris is going to get the next bag and with luck, it will be even better than mine.
Saturday night we stayed at the house and hung out. Watched a movie and played with the dogs. You know, the usual.
Sunday was spent running errands and cleaning house. Then Sunday night we had a few people over for a cookout. It was nice to socialize with the neighbors as we hadn't done that in awhile. Two of the ladies that live close are expecting so that was fun to talk about. There was much of the usual neighborhood gossip too. Chris grabbed this great picture of O after she enjoyed a cupcake with blue icing. Adorable.
Monday we took a bike ride along the new light rail tracks in Phoenix. (The tracks are mostly complete, but the trains won't start running until December 2008.) We started at the top of the line at Bethany Home & 19th Ave and rode to where it crosses the 1-10 into Tempe.
It was a gorgeous day for a ride plus we had fun stopping to look at the light rail stations. Each station has art incorporated into it so they're all unique and quite interesting. Check out the pictures.
Wayne lives not far off the route, so we stopped in at his house along the way. He joined us for the second half of the ride and for a bite of lunch. It was fun to spontaneously have him along. Yeah for national holidays!
For those of you who don't know, my husband, Chris, is a woodworker. He makes wonderful things. I'm lucky to have so many beautiful and unique things because Chris has made them. You can see more of his work at ChrisMadeThis.com.
One of my favorite things that Chris made is our bed. Chris designed it and built it himself. I love the design. I love the color. In my opinion, it's perfect. I'm so lucky to have such a talented husband.
